A huge figure on the British jazz scene since the early 60's, Art Themen has continued to work at the highest level both in the UK and on the international stage. A previous winner of the tenor saxophone category in the British Jazz Awards, this living legend of a tenor player is still regularly playing to packed crowds over at The Bull's Head.

Completing the quartet are Kate Williams on piano, Luke Fowler on double bass, and Steve Brown on drums.
Doors will be open at 20:00, the act will start at 20:30 and continue into the evening with an interval

Art Themen was involved in the traditional jazz scene in Manchester in the late 1950s. A member of the award winning Cambridge University jazz band from 1958 to 1961, he became involved in the early London blues scene, playing alongside Alexis Korner, Jack Bruce, Mick Jagger and Chuck Berry. He fronted the Stan Tracey quartet for 20 years from 1976. Key influences are Sonny Rollins and Dexter Gordon. Themen has toured world wide and played and recorded with many US and British luminaries. A busy and sought after musician who nowadays is most often seen on stage with many of the best of Britain's top jazz players such as Alan Barnes, John Donaldson, John Critchinson, Dave Newton, Georgie Fame, Don Weller, Mornington Lockett, among many others. Themen is a player who is known for his originality and individual style
Kate Williams
Piano
Kate Williams has gained a distinctive reputation as a pianist and composer. She has released several recordings, including the critically acclaimed Smoke And Mirrors with the legendary tenor saxophonist Bobby Wellins. Her latest CD, Atlas & Vulcana, is a further reflection of her colourful originality, featuring her trio, quartet and septet.

She was featured at the Pizza Express Steinway 2-Piano Festival in 2010, 2011 and 2013 (with Robin Aspland and Nikki Iles respectively), with two of the concerts being broadcast on Radio 3’s Jazz Line Up.
In 2014, she co-founded Interplay Series with conductor William Goodchild, a project featuring the music of Bill Evans arranged for trio and orchestra which was premiered at the Bristol International Jazz Festival.
She is a member of Chris Biscoe’s Mingus Moves, has recorded with vocalists Georgia Mancio (for whom she has also composed and arranged) and Juliet Kelly, as well as performing with many other leading UK artists including Anita Wardell, Tina May, Henry Lowther, Jim Mullen, John Etheridge, Julian Siegel, and Karen Sharp.

One of the foremost drummers in the UK Steve Brown quickly established himself on the Jazz scene in London having moved down from Manchester. Hugely popular with jazz audiences everywhere Steve has become 'first call' for an impressive array of jazz stars with his assured swinging playing.
